Life is short

He PingPing, who at 2 feet 5 inches tall was officially crowned world’s smallest man in 2008, died today at the age of 21. R.I.P.

In January 2007, He was invited to take part on a television program in Tokyo, Japan and became an Internet icon. His home of Inner Mongolia is also home to Bao Xishun, who at 2.36 metres tall was recognized by Guinness as the world’s tallest man until September 2009. Their televised meeting in July 2007 attracted global media attention. In May 2008 he appeared in the British Channel 4 documentary called The World’s Smallest Man and Me hosted by Mark Dolan. In September 2008 he appeared with the world’s longest-legged woman, Svetlana Pankratova, in London’s Trafalgar Square, to publicize the release of the 2009 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

In 2006 Guinness World Records disallowed an application from a then fourteen-year-old Nepalese boy, Khagendra Thapa Magar, who measures 53 cm but will review the case once he reaches 18 years of age October 2009. A Jordanian man who claims to be the world’s shortest man, Younis Edwan, has not been officially measured by Guinness.

Following his January 2007 appearance on television, He’s status as the world’s shortest walking man was verified by Guinness World Records. His height was measured three times over the course of 10 hours before he received a certificate officially naming him as the world’s shortest walking man.

In September 2008, he traveled to New York City to help launch the 2009 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records, which certified him as the world’s smallest walking man.

On April 25, 2010, He was featured in the tenth episode of the 16th cycle of the American reality show, The Amazing Race, filmed earlier in Shanghai. The episode was dedicated in his memory.

He was admitted to a hospital on 3 March 2010 in Rome, Italy after complaining of chest pains. He had been filming Lo show dei record.[11] He died on March 13, 2010 at the age of twenty-one of heart complications.[12] The Guinness World Records editor-in-chief, Craig Glenday, said that he was “an inspiration to anyone considered different or unusual.”

Mike Judge’s future won’t be blue

The LA Times has this interesting photo of Bevis & Butthead, Office Space, King of the Hill, Idiocracy and The Goode Family.

Another series created by Judge, with John Altschuler and David Krinsky, “The Goode Family,” about a family of left-wing vegans navigating life with their bleeding hearts on their sleeves, was canceled this year after its first season.

“I’m OK with that too,” he adds.

That may be because many of Judge’s projects have received a second lease on life, gaining popularity and appreciation with age, usually accompanied by the descriptor “underrated” when brought up in casual conversation. And no film better typifies this curious phenomenon than his “Office Space.” In the film, Peter, a miserable IT employee played by Ron Livingston, is hypnotized into not worrying about his job. His hypnotist dies suddenly before rousing Peter out of his relaxed state, and he returns to work, occasionally, with an anarchic attitude and an open disdain for white-collar cubicle culture.

Spooky broom story on local news

Buzz about a broom standing upright and unsupported at a downtown Prattville business is sweeping the town.

Several hundred people have stopped by Vintage Blu, a yet-to-be-opened consignment shop, since the phenomenon was discovered Thursday. Dozens of theories to explain what’s going on have been thrown out. There must be glue on the bristles of the broom, or there are magnets in the floor working in concert with the buildings electrical system, or maybe … just maybe … it’s something from beyond at work.

“I think it’s more strange than spooky,” said Christy Burdett, the shop’s owner, who has been working for several weeks to get the business open. “But it’s been fun.”

No, there isn’t any glue, and there are no magnets in the floor. As to something otherworldly going on, people will have to use their own judgment.

It all started out innocently enough. The broom was leaning against a set of mobile shelves when Della Benton, Burdett’s sister, moved the shelves Thursday afternoon. When Benton looked back, she was surprised to see the broom standing on the floor.

“Christy was behind the counter and I told her to get her camera quick and take a picture. I thought the broom would fall over in just a few seconds,” Benton said. “We had people walk past it the rest of the day. It stayed there. Spence (Williamson) from the fire department shoved the handle to the side; it went over a few inches and swung back into place.”

Some 25 hours later a friend stopping by the store touched the broom’s handle and it toppled.

“We told her she had the Holy Spirit, and she drove the ghosts away,” Christy Burdett said with a laugh.

The broom is a run-of-the-mill item, purchased from Dollar General.

“It’s just your average $2.99 broom,” said Phillip Burdett, Christy’s husband and a Prattville firefighter. “I don’t know how to explain it. We’ve had people just walk in since it happened every day we’ve been down here. They want to see the broom.”

It seems that the broom likes one spot on the store floor. People have moved it to other areas, and it hasn’t stayed upright. Tuesday during an interview with the Montgomery Advertiser, a photographer moved the broom and was able to make it stand several feet away. It was quickly returned to its favorite spot, where Christy Burdett plopped it down and there it stuck.
